LCD & Phone Parts Glossary

Wholesale LCD and phone parts come with their own vocabulary. These are the terms buyers and repair shops meet most often in quotes, spec sheets and QC reports.

OLED
Organic Light-Emitting Diode display; pixels emit their own light, giving deeper blacks than LCD.

Soft OLED
Flexible OLED panel without a rigid glass back; thinner, more impact-tolerant, usually True Tone capable.

Hard OLED
OLED panel built on a rigid glass substrate; stiffer and typically cheaper than soft OLED.

LCD
Liquid Crystal Display; needs a backlight, generally cheaper and very common for repairs.

Incell
A display type where the touch layer is integrated inside the cell — thinner and lighter than older OGS panels.

IC (driver IC)
Chip that drives the display and touch; whether it can move from the original screen determines True Tone support.

True Tone
Apple feature that adapts screen color temperature to ambient light; depends on the original screen's IC pairing.

DOA (Dead on Arrival)
A part that fails or is unusable when first received; a key quality metric for screen suppliers.

Diagnosable screen
A screen that can run iOS diagnostics by itself, without IC transplant, and shows no "Unknown Part" warning.

FOG / Flex cable
The ribbon cable bonding the panel to the logic board; damaged flex is a common failure point.

A-grade panel
Panel sorted as top quality by the factory, with no dead pixels or visible defects (per supplier's grading).

IC transplant
Moving the original screen's IC onto a new panel so the phone accepts it and keeps True Tone.
